To the attention of Ottawa City Council:

We, the undersigned residents of Ottawa, support the creation of an Anti-Demoviction Bylaw.

We ask that staff pursue this Bylaw, among other measures, to better protect residents living in affordable rental units at risk of demolition, whether single or multi-unit, across the City of Ottawa.

We ask that the Bylaw be designed both to prevent demovictions and to include mandatory support for tenants by landlords and/or developers where demoviction cannot be prevented, including measures such as re-housing, significant financial compensation, right of first refusal to return to the new development at the same or similar rent, and strict enforcement of any negotiated settlement.

Research has shown that, for every new unit of affordable housing built in Ottawa, 31 are lost. This situation is untenable, and we urge your immediate action to protect affordable units for Ottawa tenants now.
